Grass Maintenance: How to keep your grass looking prim and proper
As we head into the summer months, we’ve had a lot of clients contacting us about how to maintain their grass and keep it looking prim and proper for the upcoming season.
As the weather picks up, naturally your turf will begin to grow at a faster rate. So, how do you keep it looking luscious and green? Read on to find out our team’s top tips!
Watering
When you first have your turf laid, we recommend for you to water it daily in the mornings and evenings.
A healthy lawn needs 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, which encourages deep root growth.
A sprinkler is an easy tool to use to ensure every part of your lawn is watered evenly.
Mowing
During the growing season, you should aim to mow your lawn once a week. This allows your grass to maintain its fresh green colour whilst looking neat as well.
You shouldn't mow any more than 25% off of the top layer of your lawn at a time.
Bonus tip: check that your blades are sharp to ensure clean cuts.
Fertilising
In the spring and autumn, you should fertilise your lawn. Whichever fertiliser you end up using, make sure to follow the products instructions to reduce the risk of damaging your grass.
Weeds
Throughout the year, different weeds will grow in your lawn. This happens to every lawn, however there are ways to limit the number of weeds that grow.
For example, there are products you can use to prevent the weeds from germinating, as well as products to use to treat existing weeds.
A simple way to reduce the weeds contaminating your garden is to manually pull them out from the root – which eliminates the use of chemicals on your grass. You can either just use your hands, or a weeding tool.
Pests
During the growing season, keep a look out for pests in your lawn. If you notice any, take action to ensure they are dealt with sooner than later. You may need to contact a pest control company to resolve this issue.
Aeration
This time of year, is when your grass will be in its peak growing period. Although this activity is best to do in the autumn season, aerating your lawn this time of year is a good time as it allows it to recover quickly.
You can use a garden fork or a special spiking tool to relieve compaction and help surface water to drain away. It also allows more air to reach the roots of the grass, which aids healthy growth.
Seeding
If you notice any patches in your turf where the grass isn’t as full, you may need to lay some additional grass seeds. If you choose to do this, you need to ensure you’re watering this part of the lawn daily to encourage new growth.
Maintaining a healthy and lush lawn involves a combination of all the above tips.
By following these steps, you can maintain a healthy, attractive lawn that enhances the beauty of your outdoor space.
