How to keep your garden maintained this winter
Increased rainfall, sudden drops in temperature and periods of freezing are sadly on the horizon...
To ensure your garden is looking vibrant, and ready for the 2025 season, here are some tips from our garden landscape experts which will help keep your garden protected this winter.
Water features
It’s no surprise that during the winter months, especially in the UK, we are going to see below freezing temperatures. If your garden has irrigation, it’s a good idea to turn this off and drain out any water to ensure they do not freeze throughout the winter months.
Additionally, you may also want to cover any of water features that won't be running to prevent any rainwater filling them up and causing a risk of freezing – which could lead to cracks in the pipework.
Check your electrics
Another topic to consider is your garden electronics. To ensure these are safe during the winter months, check that all the cables and wiring are intact and don't have any splits in them. If they do, this could allow moisture into them which could cause damage and a safety risk.
Lawns
This time of year, is a perfect time to treat your lawn to a winter weed.
By doing this, it will give your lawn a boost of nutrients which will help it maintain a healthy state through the winter months.
Wooden furniture, fences and more
Around your garden will most likely be wooden features, such as furniture and fences which need to be treated before winter comes into full effect.
Your furniture may need putting away or moving to a more suitable temporary space in your garden.
This is a good time to also check for any weathering on any of your timber. If you find anything that needs repairing or treating, the winter could be a good time to carry this out as the garden will typically be being used less than usual.
Plants
In your garden, you may have plants that need protecting from colder weather. They may need covering for example, or you may have plants that need watering less often depending on the weather.
It's also a good idea to prune some of the plants in your garden at this time of year to remove any dead or diseased wood and maintain their shape.
If you fancy a change for spring, this is a great time to plan out new features for the space and make preparations for works ahead of the next season.
